Finding a Qualified Doctor for Laser Tattoo Removal

Be careful when you go to choose a laser tattoo removal  doctor, as the title “physician or surgeon” does not automatically mean the person is qualified to operate lasers safely.

The last decade, an amazing surge in tattoo popularity created a growing demand of people not only getting tattoos, but also people wanting to remove tattoos.  And with tattoo removal expanding into a lucrative business, more and more doctors from all disciplines have started jumping aboard the cosmetic gravy train advertising they now offer laser treatments.

Although it may be legal for physicians, and or nurses depending on the state, to perform laser tattoo removal treatments, it does not necessarily mean they are qualified to do so.  Operating lasers requires extensive knowledge in the area of light amplification, certified training, actual hands-on experience, and a history of proven results in order to safely treat patients with lasers.

Before signing up for laser tattoo removal from the doctor down the street, you should spend extra time doing research on the individual's reputation and training.

And, once you have narrowed your search, you will want to schedule an initial consultation with each potential doctor you are deciding among.  Before your appointment, right down a list of concerns and questions and number each item to review with the doctor.

Questions to include on your list:

Ask the doctor for an opinion of the best tattoo removal options based on the your skin type, size, and location of your tattoo.

Are there any unique issues or risks to be aware of?

How many years have he or she been performing laser tattoo removal?

What type of training and certification did they complete?

How many patients have he or she fully completed laser removal on?

May you view Before and After photos of former patients (note you want to see the doctor's patient pictures vs. stock photos from laser company)?

Also, you should ask the doctor to explain realistic expectations of the outcome of removing your tattoo.

Since there is no one laser with the technology to remove all tattoo colors, ask the doctor to write down on your notes the name of each laser and what type of laser it is that he will be using on each color in your tattoo.

Who will be administering the laser treatments?  If he or she is not administering the treatments, ask to meet the person who will be, and ask for their title, training and qualifications.

Ask for a copy of a price quote of how much each treatment costs and how many treatments are expected to reach the desired outcome you discussed earlier.

Lastly, ask the doctor to speak with one or two former patients as referrals.

Write your notes down ahead of time and bring a pen, and review them while you wait to be seen.  In the end, taking a little extra time to find a qualified doctor to perform laser tattoo removal will help to improve your results.
