Tattoo- Need Not Appy or Require Removal - The Hiring Rules of Professional Careers If you have visible tattoos that are hard to hide, some jobs will be trickier to land than others. And depending on your career goals many professional occupations you may even need to pursue tattoo removal. Many tattoos can be hidden under clothing, but those on the hands, wrists, neck or face are out there for all to see. Even tattoos on lower legs and arms are harder to hide, depending on the climate, the season and the job. If your prospective employer accepts tattoos, fine. If not, you and you finding a job continues to be a struggle, tattoo removal may be in the cards in the future. Unfortunately, removing tattoos takes time (in some cases a year or more). So if you have ink, and are about to begin your search for a career profession, you may want to rethink tattoo removal in advance. Individuals with tattoos generally have a harder time landing corporate careers involving high profile client interaction or other specialty professions such as lawyers, doctors, dentists, nurses, teachers, pharmacists, professors, and accountants. And along with these professionals, those employees in administrative or support roles - paralegals, legal assistants, physician’s assistants, dental assistants, dental hygienists, teacher aides, and so forth generally do not have visible tattoos. But it doesn’t stop there; in addition to the careers previously mentioned, numerous jobs involving client-interaction have restrictions against visible tattoos - including airline flight attendants, wait staff in upscale restaurants, receptionists, hotel administration, tour guides, bank tellers, and most sales jobs (insurance, pharmaceutical, business-product sales, etc.). Many sales clerks or associate jobs in corporate store chains i.e. Macy’s, Staples, and Costco are on the “No Ink Policy” list. On the other hand, jobs involving trade skills or limited education are highly excepting of individuals with tattoo designs. Employment positions tolerant of tattoos are janitors, shipping and receiving departments, delivery and or truck drivers, bartenders, waiting tables in chain restaurants, taxi cab drivers, computer technicians and programmers all topping the list. The type of tattoo and the design are also important to hiring employees. A small wrist tattoo, easily disguisable is likely to tolerated by certain employers, but chances are a full-face tattoo would deter hiring for many positions. Tattoos potentially offensive to other co-workers do not sit well with employers either. Simple common sense says if it would not be acceptable to display the tattoo design as a poster in the business, it should not be displayed visibly on an employee's body. Finally, a company’s clientele or target customer demographic can zing your chances of landing a job too. Older age generations associate tattoos as rebellious behavior grouping with illegal drugs, felons, and crime in general. Let’s face it: If you have visible tattoos hard to hide, some jobs will be out of bounds for you – unless you do tattoo removal with one of today’s tattoo removal methods. But removing tattoos is not an overnight process. So if your sights are set high, on earning a six-figure salary someday, start thinking about the tattoo-removal process today. |
